Original first edition of The Passion of Christ, narrated by Andre Saures and illustrated by George Rouault, an intense dramatic book in which words and illustrations powerfully convey the emotions of the sacred mystery. Limited edition in 270 numbered copies of which this copy is N. 163 on vergé de Montval paper. The book, loose as issued, is complete of Saures text, 17 original color etchings hors texte by Georges Rouault and printed by Roger Lacourière, and 82 wood-engravings (including the one on the wrapper) by Georges Aubert after Rouault in monochromatic. This copy also includes: four preparatory sketches on 'papier calque' in larger format, not printed in the book, plus an etching with aquatint in color, proof of one of the illustrations, signed in black ink by Rouault monograms, and annotation. Loose as issued, in original publisher's wrappers with title and Rouault's wood-engraved vignette, guarded in the original hard chemise and slipcase. In very good condition.
